Scammers Hiding Behind VoIP Technology
Romance scammers typically use some kind of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone app or service. This normally is a free calling and texting app like Pinger, Viber, What'sApp or Skype. By using a free VoIP service they are able to pick an area code from any location they want.
Using a VoIP service also makes it harder to track the scammer, as it is much harder to trace than other phone types. It also allows scammers to change their number frequently.
